Laura is a 2008 graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College with a dual degree in economics and political science. She is a current master’s student at Virginia Tech, pursuing a degree in political science, a field in which she ultimately hopes to teach. At present, she is employed as a teaching assistant by the university. Laura has worked as the TA for both World Politics and International Relations Theory.
Laura has competed twice for the title of Miss Virginia, held in Roanoke each June. She is extremely grateful for all the support and help she has received while participating in this program.
While in college, Laura was active as president of the college activities council, planning events on campus, working as a campus tour guide, volunteering as a girl scout leader, interning at the local battered women's shelter, and working for a local lawyer.
Laura is active in the Virginia Tech community organizing community service projects, serving as the Political Science Departmental Representative, part of the Graduate/Undergraduate Mentoring Program, November 09 Student of the Month.
Laura will be presenting her research thesis results in April 2010 at a regional conference.
Laura strives to combine her passion for academia with the values and goals of the Miss America organization, remaining active in her community while working and studying as a full time student. She is an advocate for women of all ages, working with the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A all the way to supporting laws that bring states in line with the Violence Against Women Act as well as increasing funding for support centers, creating greater preventive measures, and supporting tougher punishment for abusers.
